Crack political reporter Dave Helling digs up real stories and reports them with depth. He's also tough on politicians. No doubt the city's mayoral candidates breathed a sigh of relief when a noncompete clause in his contract forced Helling off the air last February after he decided to leave WDAF Channel 4 for KCTV Channel 5 (but not before breaking the story that the Kansas City Fire Department planned to take over MAST's ambulance services). But he's back now, and local television journalism is all the better for it. --MR
