Two and a half million people a year kick up their heels, their wheels, or their reels in Shawnee Mission Park. The 1,250 acres of open space offer a little bit of everything. There's the 250-acre lake, stocked with a half dozen species of fish, a 50-acre off-leash dog park, a portion of the 17-mile Mill Creek Streamway hiking and biking trail, Theater in the Park, and a remote-control flying field, just to name a few of the attractions. The parkland was acquired back in 1956 and now sits within the boundaries of Lenexa and Shawnee. "It's certainly the jewel of the Johnson County park system," says Parks Superintendent Bill Cobb. "It's one of our older parks, and it's got great features and great attendance."
