On Friday nights at Pauly's on Broadway, DJs Superwolf and Memphis Black spin sweet, sweet soul. Playing only 45s, the duo favors rare small-label funk records released between 1968 and 1974. Some of the selected artists are local; all are obscure. "We love the quality of the lo-fi production," Superwolf says. "It sounds like it was recorded in someone's living room." And some of these records might have been discovered in someone's living room, as these DJs scour houses, garages, warehouses, thrift shops, flea markets, and auctions in search of more black gold to set under their needles. As a result of their hard work, music lovers finally have a place to dance to powerful grooves they haven't already heard a thousand times.
