Not since Lassie has a canine had such a love affair with the TV camera. The 10-year-old (her 11th birthday is on November 11) mix of shepherd, sheltie, and other more exotic breeds is the longtime pet and companion of KSHB weatherman Gary Lezak, who takes the dog to all his public appearances. Windy also accompanies Lezak to the Channel 41 studio, where she makes regular on-air appearances each Thursday on the 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts. Her media celebrity hasn't gone to her head, says Lezak. "Windy is still very humble. But on the Thursday newscasts, she really believes it's her time to perform and she immediately jumps into her chair and starts doing tricks." Windy, Lezak reports, is not a member of AFTRA, the TV union ("She doesn't even have a contract with the station," Lezak adds). But she remains one of local TV's most beloved celebs, greeting her fans at personal appearances "by letting them shake her paw or giving kisses or, occasionally, playing dead."
