Various ArtistsDogtown and Z-Boys (Enjoy)By Geoff HarknessPublished on June 27, 2002The prize-winning documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys recounts the tale of Zephyr, a crew of Southern California surfers that revolutionized skateboarding during the mid-'70s. With its ten songs spanning only forty minutes, the movie's period-piece soundtrack aspires to emulate the running time of vinyl records from the pre-CD era. But though the trend toward shorter CDs is welcome, Dogtown suffers from a lack of ambition. Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" and ZZ Top's "La Grange" are just two of the played-to-death classic-rock songs Dogtown exhumes. The James Gang's "Funk 49" and Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" lack only "Life's Been Good" to complete a Walshed-up trifecta. Dogtown might be the don't-miss documentary of the summer, but the soundtrack spins its wheels aimlessly.
