Tuesdays at Mike's Tavern are known as Turntable Tuesdays, with DJs Lucas Palmer and Joe Cummings scratching the night away while you play pool or, if you must, the ubiquitous Golden Tee. Doesn't that sound nice? Mike's is located at 5424 Troost. For information, call 816-444-3399.

Today the North Oak Branch of the Midcontinent Public Library (8700 North Oak Trafficway) offers spectacular chemical reactions, fantastic forces and bubbling potions. It's hard to say whether the mad scientist on hand at this kid-oriented event will be of the haywire, Back to the Future variety or the tame and edifying Mr. Wizard's World variety. Either way, 'sploding stuff doesn't sound like a bad way to spend the afternoon. Personally, we were sold when they mentioned "potions." For information on the 3 p.m. program, call 816-436-4385.
