Best Effort to Bring Fine Arts to Kansas CityHarriman Arts ProgramPublished on October 07, 2004We're proud of the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Conservatory of Music, and we try to catch performances of the Lyric Opera, the ballet, the symphony and a host of smaller, local companies on occasion. But we also know that Kansas City is not one of the showiest centers for classical music and dance. That's why we're big fans of the Harriman Arts Program of William Jewell College. For 40 years, the series has brought to Kansas City the world's most talented ballerinas, modern dancers, opera singers, Broadway stars, and vocal and instrumental ensembles. Organizers program an eclectic mix of soloists and groups and package their tickets in series that make sense. This year's "great variety series" includes the National Acrobats of Taiwan, the whimsical British men's sextet the King's Singers, and Broadway diva Audra McDonald. Demonstrating their foresight, programmers always include a group of more affordable tickets for students and the budget-minded among us.
