New Year’s DJ Roundup

By Jason Harper

Published on December 29, 2005

Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day brings good luck. But dancing to the Black-Eyed Peas' "My Humps" on New Year's Eve is kids' stuff. Here's a quick rundown of some of the weekend's best grown-up dance parties. First, it's house heaven at Kabal: Friday, Deep Fix brings renowned Detroit DJ Chuck Daniels to drop the needle with KC favorite Pat Nice. on Saturday, New York City's Astro & Glyde return to lubricate the dance floor with slick mixes and more throbbing beats. On Saturday at the Granada in Lawrence, $20 buys a pass to 2006 via tons of breakbeat, jungle and more kinds of electronic music than cheeses from Hilshire Farms, courtesy of Agent K, the KRBZ 96.5 the Buzz's C-Vaughn and four other DJs. For that species of dance fan who is moved by naught but retro, head to Jilly's, where DJ Clockwerk always puts on a killer Saturday night '80s show. Fans of Oz McGuire's ability to summon sounds from obscure realms (grime, dancehall, reggaeton, old-school funk and soul) and spin them into irresistible sets should pencil in the Record Bar New Year's Eve. Dozens more DJs play this weekend, so check www.pitch.com for info on these and other events.
