Funked Up

At the end of May, the mass emigration of students from Lawrence leads to that brief period of time when townies can run unburdened. Free of mad basketball traffic and onslaughts of chartered party buses, evenings out are typically a bit more mellow and reminders of why many people decide to stay in Lawrence after college.

One place always worth checking out is the Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts), which hosts a guest DJ each week for Funk Fridays. LPs are showcased throughout the evening in the beer garden, which was remodeled earlier this year to accommodate larger crowds. And dancing is no faux pas. The later it gets, the more eager people become to let out their inner James Brown — and grab strangers to join them. Frozen margarita and Jack Daniels specials are sure to quench any funk (or Friday) fan’s thirst; smokers are welcome in the garden. Cover is $2 for those 21 and over. Call 785-749-7676 for more information.
