Slim for LifeThis Week We Love, October 26Published on November 15, 2006 at 10:36amI do love Slimfast and the exceptional work he has randomly done in our community. He took all the crap Lazlo gave him and still showed up at Fuel every Friday night! He is now succeeding in the morning on Afentra's Big Fat Morning Buzz. We in Lenexa love Slimfast, and those who don't can take their bowl of f-off in the corner and eat it alone! It makes them believe that what they have to say is worth something, which it obviously is not. The Westboro Church is like a petulant child, always trying to garner negative attention so that it feels as though someone cares about it. The same steps need to be taken that you would take with a disobedient child: Ignore it. These people picket funerals of dead people who have no way to defend themselves. That sounds like a real fair fight. This entire ideological campaign is composed of idiotic, illogical and cowardly people. If they really wanted to change the world, there are a thousand different things they could do that would actually give them credibility and would help out fellow humans instead of just using the message of God to spread their message of hate. Monique Maes, Kansas City, MissouriShirley, You Jest Odd how Shirley Phelps-Roper can spout God this, God that, yet shun family members who refuse to follow her and her cronies like a pied piper. Doesn't sound very Godlike to me. One of their signs references that God hates the U.S. Well, if that is so, why do they continue to live in the U.S. of A.? Contradictions, contradictions. Lyn King, LeavenworthVanity Fare The next day, a friend hands me a copy of Justin Kendall's article in the Pitch, and I cannot read it fast enough. I shake my head at the pictures of young children holding signs that read "God hates Fags" and "God hates Soldiers." I read on in wonderment of how someone like Shirley Phelps-Roper can be so brainwashed, so horribly cruel and so wrong ... when I stop for a minute to ponder the fact that I am part of this circle! If there is no audience, then the performance doesn't mean much at all, now, does it? Haven't we figured out their sin? Vanity! If we continue to give them the attention cover pages, talk shows, etc. we give them exactly what they want. I know they aren't going to go away, and at this point, I don't care. Since we can't stop anyone from exercising their right to free speech, can't we all freely stop caring what they think? Sticks and stones.... Aly Jones, Overland ParkSign Up I would like to send positive messages that will in some way give people relief from the intense negative energy put out by the Phelpses' pickets. Signs that say things like "God loves everyone, even you, Fred Phelps" and "Ignore the Hatred" would be good if displayed before or after a WBC picket. Anything we can do to positively fight hatred will benefit all. Charles Wines, Kansas City, MissouriLaw School
