Snuff Jizz

For some in KC, Mardi Gras is all about beads, beer and boobs, preferably in a sports bar. That's just fine. But many locals prefer to revel in the more exotic, funky and sometimes surreal manner exemplified at the Top of the Bottoms' 18th Street party on Tuesday (see Night & Day). This crowd can get its freak on a couple of days before going all out and ass up (probably in some kind of feather-based costume) in the Crossroads on Tuesday by first attending an early show (8 p.m., 18 and up) Sunday at the Record Bar. The show, unofficially titled Snuff Jizz, brings together out-jazzers Snuff Jazz and disco art-punkers Street Jizz. "It'll be like the redheaded stepchild of jazz meets the redheaded stepchild of pop, and they go out on a date and get really dressed up," says Snuff saxophonist Mark Southerland. Snuff Jazz takes the stage first, setting the mood with mind-altering freak jazz, then Street Jizz brings the twisted dance party, with members from both bands intermingling. This date sounds more like a marriage made in voodoo heaven.
