A Shot and a Laugh

We wanted to combine theater and drinking,” Theater on the Rocks co-founder Danny Schluck says. Six months in, Schluck and his cohorts, mostly KU theater students, are drawing crowds of folks looking for a dose of intelligent humor to get sloshed to. The subject matter varies: “We’re all over the map,” explains Schluck, whose theater troupe performs at Fatso’s (1016 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence) the third Monday of every month. “At Christmas we had a drunken Christmas Carol and also a piece called Jesus’ Birthday party.” In that number, Schluck played Mr. Messiah himself. Since then, the crew has had to borrow chairs from the Granada next door to accommodate increasing flocks of intoxicated true believers. Cast members co-write all material. This month’s piece boldly addresses abortion via booze-fueled jokes. “We’ll take a shot each before we perform and by the end we’ll all be hammered—but not too wasted to act,” Schluck promises. Join the revelry tonight at 8 pm. Call 785-856-4005 for more information.
