Broomball has humble origins: kids, ice, broom, ball. But the game has been predictably reconfigured by grown-ups as an organized sport with leagues, a championship game and a governing body called the International Federation of Broomball Associations. The once-spontaneous ice game of faux hockey played with Chuck Taylors and kitchen brooms now sports specially designed rubberheaded brooms. Inviting spontaneity back into the game, Ice Midwest (12140 West 135th Street in Overland Park, 913-851-1600) hosts a drop-in broomball game, 8 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, for players ages 16 and older. No registration is required; admission is $10. Players are encouraged to bring athletic shoes, gloves and kneepads.
