Thanks to America’s founding fathers and some of their friends, today we can enjoy our tea without paying tribute to the crown. Tax protests are an important thread in the tapestry of American history, so kudos to Shreveport, Louisiana, lawyer Tommy Cryer who was acquitted July 21 by a federal court of felony tax-evasion charges. “The court could not find a law that makes me liable or makes my revenues taxable,” Cryer claimed. But parents of schoolchildren should wait until Monday to throw their tea in the harbor. Today begins a three-day Missouri sales-tax holiday, exempting certain school-related purchases from sales taxes: clothing (articles priced at $100 or less), school supplies (up to a $50 purchase), software (priced $350 or less), and personal computers and peripheral devices (not to exceed $3,500). Just remember that at 12:01 a.m. Monday, the Man resumes taking his cut.
