There’s a special museum in Winterset, Iowa. The tiny white house is filled with childhood mementos, movie memorabilia and T-shirts that read “Birthplace of John Wayne.” It may sound unimpressive, but the folks who work there have given enough $4 tours to devise the John Wayne Birthplace Museum and Learning Center, an 8,500-square-foot “interactive experience” that will stand adjacent to the little house. Not a bad monument to a dude whose parents named him Marion. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Duke’s birth, the Central Branch of the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library has been hosting the John Wayne Retrospective, a film series featuring some of the American icon’s greatest moments in cinema. Today at 1:30 p.m., see Wayne in The Cowboys, the 1972 movie wherein our hero is a cattle rancher whose tough love turns young hired hands into cattle-herding men.
