Since 2004, students and faculty of the Kansas City Art Institute have exhibited and sold artwork in a space once occupied by Kansas City political boss Tom Pendergast. Never dull, the openings at the KCAI Crossroads Gallery (1908 Main) are a First Friday destination and a priceless opportunity to chat with student creators in the same room where Boss Pendergast might have decided to back Harry Truman. The gallery opens tonight with a joint exhibition by Sarah Luther and Erica Mahinay, seniors in the painting program. Thresholds: Inscapes and Adaptations, a mixed-media show, features fabric installations and paintings that deal with the relationships between people and their dwellings. Pendergast’s relationship to 1908 Main spawned, among other things, the KCPL Building, a concrete company and a 15-month prison sentence for failing to pay his taxes.
