Kansas City cyclists don't need Halloween as an excuse to get decked out in costumes and shock the bejesus out of the general public. They dress up, trick out their two-wheeled rides with decorations and treat the city to a display of cyclist pride the last Friday of every month. Critical Mass draws scores of bike enthusiasts who aim to educate the motoring public that bicycles are part of traffic, too, and deserve the same courtesy afforded to cars. Plus, what better way to honor the Halloween spirit than to surprise posh Plazagoers and city drivers, who stare, slack-jawed, at the roving band of open-air revelers hollering and having fun? The party starts in the Westport Sunfresh parking lot (4001 Mill) at 6 p.m., and the wandering bike parade takes to the streets at 6:30.
