Because their own protests frequently earn the attention of the local FBI and police, it stands to reason that members of Kansas Mutual Aid would take a vested interest in the San Francisco 8. In the eyes of the Lawrence resistance organization, the recently revived cases, which involve former Black Panthers indicted for crimes to which they were allegedly tortured into confessing 30 years ago, are important referendums. "It shows that torture is nothing new in the American justice system, particularly with dissidents," KMA member Dave Strano says. The KMA seeks to raise awareness tonight with a fundraising soul-food dinner and a screening of the SF8 documentary Legacy of Torture at Lawrence's Ecumenical Christian Ministries (1204 Oread, 785-843-4933).
