When the DeWayn Brothers started venturing north of Emporia to Lawrence and Kansas City a couple of years back, the quintet sounded like a pretty good emulator of the insurgent country sound popularized in this (red)neck of the woods by Split Lip Rayfield. Fast-forward three albums and hundreds of shows (253 in 2006 alone), and the DeWayns are in a league of their own. The group's torch-carrying twang oozes Kansas pride — a Walnut Valley Festival dime bag of bluegrass, country and that punk-rock hotfooting that Split Lip does so well. Out front are the canyon-sized holler of singer Jamie Briggeman and some dual mandolin and banjo shredding. The group unleashes a crockpot's worth of long-simmering potential on its new album, Farmer, which was recorded at the 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor of Truckstop Honeymoon's Mike West. Tonight at 10, the DeWayn Brothers join BigcatKS 66666 at the Gaslight Tavern (317 North Second Street in Lawrence, 785-856-4330). Tickets cost $4, and Free State Ad Astra pints are $2.
