So Cold

By Richard Gintowt

Published on January 17, 2008

You have to be willing to sacrifice if you want to be cold as ice. Foreigner knew that, and the same wisdom pertains to ice carvers who master the Zenlike discipline en route to becoming executive chefs. At the highest levels of competition, ice sculptures are tricked out with lasers and sometimes rise as tall as multiple-story buildings. (Yes, Virginia, size does matter.) Such showboating isn't exactly the focus of this afternoon's Fifth-Annual Winter Fest Ice Carving Competition from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel (6100 College Boulevard, 913-234-2100), but the free event does provide an opportunity to see a dozen local chain-saw-wielding artisans present their take on a Wizard of Oz theme. Consider the sage advice of another hit movie, Vanilla Ice's Cool as Ice, as motivation to bring a date: "When a girl has a heart of stone, there's only one way to melt it. Just add ice.
