Cinematic Variety Pack

Bourgeois Lawrencians of the postgrad variety can sometimes feel like they stepped into a Nada Surf song when they visit the University of Kansas campus: I want to know what it's like on the inside of love/Standing at the gates, I see the beauty above. Fortunately, we wallflowers are exactly the sort of people the Spencer Museum of Art (1301 Mississippi, Lawrence, 785-864-4710) has been working double time to attract. The free Spring 2008 Film Series is the easiest way to prove to your date that you're a savvy romantic, without resurrecting that tattered student ID. The series begins tonight at 7 with a screening of Victory Over the Sun, which sounds like a Flaming Lips song but is actually a cinematic adaptation of Kazimir Malevich's futurist opera. Those 39 propriety-challenging minutes will be followed by Dziga Vertov's Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a silent documentary about daily life in the Soviet Union. Russian-studies Professor William Comer will introduce both films, so you don't have to fake your way through the post-screening conversation with your date.
