Local and national Latino writers return to Kansas City this year for the second-ever Segunda Página, a literary showcase coordinated by the Latino Writers Collective. Renowned author and cultural crusader Helena Maria Viramontes headlines this year with a reading and a reception. As a student, Viramontes participated in the 1968 Chicano Blowouts, a series of protests against unequal conditions in East Los Angeles schools. Her position at the center of the Southern California Chicano movement's struggle gave her an unparalleled perspective that became a locus for her novels and short stories, eventually earning her the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature and recognition by the National Latina Alliance and the National Association of Chicano and Chicana Studies. This acclaim earned her a spot along with John Steinbeck in the PBS documentary The Migrant Struggle. She will appear at the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library's Plaza Branch (4801 Main, 816-701-3481) at 7 p.m. Helena Maria Viramontes
