Between Into the Wild and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Hollywood has pretty much tapped out the rite-of-passage story. Luckily for us, Kansas City photographer Erin Pycior found inspiration for her post-grad sojourn from Oregon to Alaska in more time-tested sources: Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums and Homer's Ulysses. "I was looking for some sort of perspective," says Pycior, who has a bachelor's degree in photography from the City College of New York. "I did get it, but there wasn't a big lesson to be learned. It was more about meditation — being quiet and enjoying the moment." Amid old Army-base towns and the vast icy tundra, Pycior shot 20 rolls of medium-format film and kept diligent notes describing her detours. She compiled her impressions into a self-published book and a dozen 16-inch-by-16-inch prints that she'll unveil during a free reception from 6 to 7 tonight at the Brick (1727 McGee, 816-421-1634).
