When playwright Eve Ensler first staged The Vagina Monologues in 1996, the controversial show was billed as a celebration of women's bodies. But by 1998, it was being used to draw attention to sexual abuse and violence against women and girls around the globe. That same year, V-Day was born. V-Day isn't just a day to reflect on the fact that at least one in three women worldwide has been beaten, forced into sex or abused in some way — it's also a movement to stop the violence. In honor of V-Day's 10th birthday, the University of Missouri-Kansas City Women's Center is staging a performance of The Vagina Monologues. Proceeds will benefit local violence-prevention organizations.Advance tickets cost $7 for students and $12 for nonstudents. At the door, tickets are $10 and $15. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the University Center, Pierson Auditorium, 5000 Holmes. Call 816-235-6222.
