February is Great American Pie Month. Celebrate it with a warm wedge of sweet, juicy pie. That sounds innocent enough, but long before the 1999 film American Pie depicted a different way of enjoying America's best-loved dessert, there was a sexy — sometimes dirty — subtext to the word. Sweetie pie has been a term of affection for decades, but there's also pie hole (an open mouth — use whatever context you want) and get pie, which has a lot more to do with sexual intercourse than stopping to pick up a deep-dish Dutch apple at the supermarket. Both straights and gays use the term cream pie to mean something completely different from the pudding-based confection slathered with whipped cream or meringue at most diners. But for most sensualists, a piece of pie is sexy enough in its most straightforward incarnation: as a dessert made with one crust or two, baked or filled with some luscious, creamy filling. The biggest pie manufacturer in town is still Overland Park's Golden Boy Pies, which sells 40 varieties and makes thousands every day. McGonigle's Market sells whole Golden Boy pies, or you can get a slice at any Town Topic diner. Better yet, call Golden Boy at 913-384-6460 for a made-to-order number. Owner Terry Hunt thinks the sexiest pie in his repertoire is a chocolate-strawberry number. That makes sense: Both main ingredients are, historically, potent aphrodisiacs.
