Frogs are dropping like flies. An infectious fungal disease known as chytrid, combined with the usual suspects of pollution, deforestation and climate change, is threatening to wipe out an estimated one-third of the world's frogs, toads, newts and salamanders, according to the World Conservation Union. Face it: Frogs need some love.Learn how to aid amphibians today at the Leap Year: Year of the Frog Event at the Kansas City Zoo (6800 Zoo Drive in Swope Park). Herpetophiles can check out the zoo's newest amphibian exhibits, which feature everyone's favorite ectothermal vertebrates, and learn their importance to world ecosystems. The exhibits explain how people can help save amphibians and feature hands-on demonstrations, crafts and live animal shows. This all-ages frogfest gets hopping at 10 a.m. and is included with the regular price of zoo admission: $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors and $6.50 for kids ages 3-11.
