Studying the oil painting "Self With Green Background," one wonders about the artist, painted in shadow, staring out with the hunched shoulders and uneasy gaze of a pervert. Hollow-cheeked and sunken-eyed, he wears an expression of mingled guilt and indifference. Who but the most observant would recognize it as the work of John Mellencamp, author of that little ditty about Jack and Diane? Today through Sunday, The 99.7 FM The Boulevard Rock Art Show brings together photos, memorabilia, concert posters and musicians' artwork in a free and surprising exhibit at Crown Center (2450 Grand, 816-274-8444). See Mellencamp's sinister self-portrait, Brian Wilson's dreamy yet disturbing beach landscapes, Frank Sinatra's experiments with shape, and a remarkable collection of half-assed Ringo Starr drawings (including the cryptic "Bad Finger"). All the pieces are available for purchase, with proceeds going to Gifted Hands, a local nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence. The art's on display from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
