thought for food

One of the best books of 2006 was Cormac McCarthy's The Road, a postapacolyptic trek through a barren wasteland. With the world turned to ashes, the main problem for the book's heroes — aside from torturous introspection — is bands of roaming cannibals spit-roasting babies and keeping gardens of crippled people in the attic. Learn to put off this bleak future for a while by attending a 7 p.m. discussion titled "World Food Crisis: How Did It Happen and What Can Be Done?" at the Kauffman Foundation (4801 Rockhill). The International Relations Council of Kansas City, the event's organizer, plans to gather a few experts and start the discussion by citing the Food and Agriculture Organization's statistic that the price of food has gone up 41 percent since October 2007. Council members pay $10, the talk is $15 for nonmembers. Call 816-221-4204 or see irckc.com.
