Restaurants will be packed with mothers today as their offspring treat them to brunches, lunches, dinners and desserts. Before you sit down to a hearty meal, though, encourage Mom to work up an appetite by participating in the Mother's Day 5K, a 3.1-mile race for women and girls of all ages. Technically, it's a competitive event, with cash prizes for the top three finishers. But walking the whole way is totally OK. The event begins at 8 a.m. at Corporate Woods (9401 Indian Creek Parkway, Building 40, in Overland Park); registration is open from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and costs $30 to $35. A portion of the proceeds go to the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. For more information, see mothersdayrun.com.
