Hanging At the Barbershop

Brooke Letourneau's photography mixes traditional and digital techniques, often in the same image. The Pittsburg State University graduate's debut exhibition, Accumulation, opens tonight at the Barbershop Gallery (415 East 33rd Street, 816-665-8118). Owner John Mulvihill says, "Brooke worked her way through a wide variety of artistic media — started out in ceramics, then moved into drawing and painting and ended up with a very serious concentration on photography. Originally from a traditional perspective, the 35 mm world, she worked a lot with photo processing and then moved into the digital side. She's got a nice balance of traditional photography, as well as digitally enhanced photography, manipulating and enhancing the photos after the fact." The exhibit is characteristic of the Barbershop, with its focus on undiscovered talent. "We feature emerging artists — we love showing an artist's work for the first time," Mulvihill says. "We try to get the feel of the old days of the Crossroads District with the free beer and wine, and we create a party environment. We're a little bit off the beaten path, so we try to create a good party to bring people out." Be the first to see Letourneau's work tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.
