Carl, a miniature dachshund wearing a red bandanna around his neck, says if he were crowned king of the Dog Royalty Contest going on at today's LollaPAWlooza, he'd "bring peace and harmony to the world." Sounds like Carl is king of the pooper-scooper, if you know what we mean. But LollaPAWlooza is much more than a beauty pageant. Available at the event: $25 microchipping and $10 vaccinations for pets from 9 a.m. to noon, $1 hot dogs, $12 event T-shirts, other products from vendors, pet adoptions, and lots of prizes for dogs with the biggest ears or the best tricks or any of a zillion other categories. Your dog can't lose. Every cent raised will go to Halfway Home Pet Adoptions (Kansas City's newly privatized shelter) and Sirius Dog Adoptions. Also, anyone who brings donations for the shelter (kitty litter, pet food, bedding, toys, etc.) gets a free raffle ticket. Prizes include gift certificates to local restaurants and a year's worth of free car washes. It's all happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at HJ's Youth Building in Brookside (6425 Wornall), rain or shine. For more information or to cast a $1 vote in the Dog Royalty Contest, see waldodogpark.com.
