Trinidad, Colorado, which is nestled in the foothills of the Rockies along the Santa Fe Trail, is a quiet, rural western town that still appears to belong to a bygone era. At first glance, one would never imagine that it is "the sex change capital of the world." P.J. Raval and Jay Hodges' documentary feature, Trinidad, examines the town through the personal stories and shared struggle of three transgender women — a surgeon, a family practitioner and an activist — who have settled there to facilitate the physical, emotional and spiritual transition of the scores of patients who visit Trinidad each year to undergo gender-reassignment surgery. Sponsored by the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Kansas City and UMKC's Office of Student Life, the Kansas City premiere of Trinidad screens tonight at 7 in Pierson Auditorium 3 in UMKC's University Center (5000 Holmes).
