Three decades before Dr. Strangelove pitted us against the Soviets at Doomsday's doorstep, the Marx Brothers picked on someone their own size in Duck Soup, leading tiny bankrupt Freedonia to war against neighboring Sylvania — because of a woman. Wealthy Mrs. Gloria Teasdale is no Helen of Troy, but that doesn't preclude Rufus T. Firefly from fighting for her honor, "which is probably more than she ever did." The Kansas City Public Library presents "Box Office Gold: Cinema of the 1930s," celebrating the movies that entertained during the Great Depression.
