One out of every three women in the U.S. will be assaulted in her lifetime, according to the Web site for Pepperface. The owners of Sugar Hill, a boutique in Overland Park, recently sent word that they’re now stocking the line of Swarovski-crystal-encrusted vials of pepper spray. Sugar Hill’s press release claims that Pepperface is carried by the likes of Kelly Ripa and Paris Hilton.

The palm-sized canisters, which purportedly hold the world’s smallest vials of chemical pepper, contain three thug-blinding hits apiece. They come in chrome colors, “Bad-Ass Black” and a $50 edition plated in 18-karat gold.

More surprising than a $50 price tag on a can of pepper spray is the fact that the co-owners of Sugar Hill decided to locate their month-old “chic urban boutique” in Johnson County.

“There’s a market out here,” insists Ahmad Battles, 28, who is from Kansas City, Missouri. He says he and co-owner LeAndrea Harden chose JoCo over locations in the inner city, midtown or Independence because they wanted to be near Oak Park Mall. In addition to high-end mace, Sugar Hill carries Roca Wear, Jay-Z’s line of women’s clothes; Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons; and Miss Sixty. Welcome to urban gangsta chic, Johnson County. – Nadia Pflaum
