This Saturday marks the grand opening of Mochi-Yo, a yogurt shop offering the Korean-style tart yogurt that's popular on both coasts. To celebrate, owners Kirk Goza and Wes Bergmann (yes, that Wes Bergmann
) are giving away free yogurt the entire weekend.
Goza said he got the idea to open a frozen yogurt store while he was a student in New York. "A PinkBerry
opened up down the street and I was going there every day. Part of opening this store is I really like the yogurt."
Mochi-Yo is located in Leawood at 4535 W 119th Street in the new One Nineteen Shopping Center. According to Goza, they picked the south Johnson County location for two reasons: "We use real fat-free yogurt and fresh-cut fruit toppings to make our product, which adds to our costs. The health-conscious image is something that I know will appeal to people in Leawood. And of course I grew up here, so it's fun to bring something like this home."
Goza graduated from Pembroke Hill and Bergmann from Blue Valley North. Both twentysomethings have spent the majority of their lives in Leawood. After living in New York for five years, Goza returned home, drawn by the lower cost of living. "I came back and I got to the point I needed something to do. So we put it together and I went around to investors and now we're about to open. It's been a lot of work and not much sleep but that's partially because I'm up at night nervous."
The store will offer four flavors of yogurt -- the standard tart flavor, green tea and two rotating flavors like watermelon or other fruit. Two dozen toppings are available, from fruit like pineapple or pomegranate seeds to mochi (small rice-cake) balls. Tart yogurt is real yogurt with live cultures in it and is relatively good for you. A four-once serving has just over 100 calories. Mochi-Yo sells the yogurt in three sizes: small (4 oz., $2.50), medium (8 oz., $3.50) and large (12 oz., $5.50). Toppings are $1 a piece.
The deal this weekend is one free yogurt per person any size. Toppings are free, as are yogurt-based smoothies, which normally retail for $5.50 a person. The deal lasts all of Saturday and Sunday.
Mochi-Yo's hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The store's phone number is 913-338-0557
