This is not the first time Fat City has paid homage to the fast food fare at the 47-year-old Humdinger Drive-In at 2504 E. 9th Street, between Wabash and Prospect on the old Eastside.
But in this summer of big burger love, the Humdinger -- open most days from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. -- is a unique surviving relic of Kansas City's 1960s love affair with drive-ins (there were 65 drive-ins, including the original Winstead's, in the 1960 City Directory), and sells what may be the best double cheeseburger in town for $3.29. The menu also includes chili burgers, pizza burgers, fried zucchini, shrimp baskets and cherry malts. And the sandwich guaranteed to clog your arteries for a lifetime: The Big D Burger with Double Cheese and a Fried Egg. You may need to chase that one down with a chocolate malt and a dose of Lipitor.
