With the Book of Eli still going strong at the box office and Legion now joining it, I've been pondering the dystopian future. Which made me think about what five Kansas City foods I'd crave or miss most after an apocalypse.

Each post-apocalyptic film has a different vision of society, so you can consider these as suggested food pairings when you rent them from Netflix.

(5) If the The Road is right ...
Winstead's Cherry or Vanilla Coke. A father and son revel in the moment of discovering an unopened Coca-Cola. I was just overjoyed to discover that this simple but delicious drink came with crushed ice.

(4) If Demolition Man is right...
The Better Cheddar cheese case. You probably thought I'd say Taco Bell, since it has won the fictional fast-food wars in this Sly Stallone/Wesley Snipes shoot-'em-up. But in reality, no apocalypse has ever been cheesier than the one envisioned in this future world, and it doesn't get much better than the cheese selections at this Plaza staple.

(3) If Planet of the Apes is right...
Succotash french toast. If we wake up one day in a society ruled by monkeys, there might be no better way to appease the masses than the french toast with bananas and caramel sauce.

(2) If Mad Max is right...
Bluestem's wagyu tartare
. With gas at a premium and the possibility of eating our meat raw, I'd rather it be mouth-watering. The tartare served on a sourdough crisp with Maytag blue cheese is enought to make you forget about the next town over run by an androgynous, crazy guy with a mohawk.

(1) If I am Legend is Right...
The Farmhouse osso buco
. As we speed down a deserted Main Street in our Ford Mustang, it would be great to know that the game we hunt could be prepared like the tender pork osso buco at this River Market restaurant.
