While there are an endless number of food holidays -- today is apparently National Hazelnut Cake Day -- most of them have no real connection to the day on which they fall. It's time for that to change. With three simple steps, America can have a definitive set of food holidays that will provide more fodder for food blogs and better highlight some of the uniquely American foods.
Trim the Fat. We need to get rid of extraneous food holidays and clear marketing gimmicks. Instead of making every day a food holiday, I think we're looking at somewhere between once and twice a week. National Hazelnut Cake Day, you won't make the cut. Especially when tomorrow is National Rocky Road Ice Cream Day.
America has a lot of different foods, but how many are worth their own holiday? Asking the simple question, "Am I excited to eat this today in the name of celebration?" should provide a simple answer.
Tis' The Season. National Chocolate Milkshake Day is on September 12 and National Rice Pudding Day is August 9. I'm certainly going to need a chocolate milkshake before September and I definitely don't want to eat rice pudding in the middle of a Kansas City summer. A little forethought could go a long way.
Today, for example, should be National Iced Coffee Day. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial launch of summer, with barbecues and pool openings. It's the perfect time to celebrate the change from hot to iced coffee.
Get Hallmark on the phone. I want a card on National Sandwich Day (November 3) or a Lobster-gram on National Lobster Day (June 15). I want an Advent-style calendar that counts down the days to National Meatball Day (March 9), with tiny meatballs behind each window.
Our food holidays need some organization -- right now any company or professional association can just declare a given week or month as a celebration of a given food item. So get on it Hallmark, I'd consider it a personal favor.
