Saturday night's "sweet 16 stabbing" wasn't really a sweet 16 party (but it makes for catchy headlines, see here and here). A police report says it was really a 21st birthday party, and now 17-year-old Angel V. Esparza is accused of stabbing three people, including a 16-year-old boy.
Officers arrived on the scene around 11:22 p.m. Saturday, just in time
to see several people fighting in the 16th floor ballroom of the
downtown Holiday Inn at 1215 Wyandotte Street.
The 16-year-old stabbing victim told police that Esparza and friends
"crashed the party." His older brother talked to Esparza, and he agreed
to not fight. But

A third victim suffered a cut to his right ear, neck and shoulder.
Two of the victims were taken to Truman Medical Center where they were
treated for their injuries. The third victim refused medical treatment.
A brown fixed handle knife was recovered from the men's restroom.
Police took Esparza into custody at the scene. Two of the victims
identified him as the alleged attacker. He is charged with two counts of
assault (a third victim didn't
want to press charges).
