Finding the great pumpkin is not just a quest for Charlie Brown. We all have a responsibility to sift through the menus around town to uncover the finest pumpkin options.
And before the weather turns colder that means a battle between rival concretes -- the pecan pumpkin concrete mixer from Culver's and the pumpkin pie concrete from Sheridan's. Only one can lay claim to the best pumpkin pie you eat with a spoon.
Pumpkin Pecan Concrete Mixer (Culver's): Whole pecans give the first few spoonfuls a nice crunch and a bit of saltiness. But once you dig a bit deeper, this is a seriously sweet version of pumpkin pie with a heavy shot of cinnamon. The color is the same as a Creamsicle, but the overriding flavor is that of pumpkin spice eggnog -- rich, cloying eggnog. This concrete is sweet as all get out.

Pumpkin Pie Concrete (Sheridan's):
Sheridan's combines frozen custard with a whole piece of pumpkin pie. Yup, an entire piece of pie. The concrete is then topped with a generous circle of whipped cream.
The result is a drinkable pumpkin pie. The custard is sweet, but still lets the pumpkin flavor shine through. And hitting a chunk of pie with your spoon feels like winning the jackpot. The crust isn't soggy; it's outstanding. And the pie filling acts like a flavor ribbon in ice cream. The Verdict:
This is a runaway victory for Sheridan's -- I couldn't stop eating it. And once I made the association with pumpkin spice eggnog, it kind of ruined the first concrete for me.
While Culver's is reminiscent of pumpkin pie, the Sheridan's concrete simply elevates pumpkin pie to a new level of addictive drinkableness. I think we've got a new Thanksgiving dessert tradition here at Fat City.
