The age-old question of whether a frying pan is an effective weapon was answered this past weekend. On Saturday morning, an elderly woman swinging a frying beat down a man accused of attempting to rape her in her Hutchinson, Kansas, home. The Hutchinson News reported that 25-year-old Kevin Scott Funderburk was wearing a neck brace when he made his first appearance in court Tuesday.
Hutchinson police gave this account: Funderburk allegedly talked his way into the woman's home, claiming he was homeless with nowhere to go. He was drunk, and once in the home, he's accused of attacking the woman, holding her down and trying to rape her. The woman wasn't having it and grabbed her frying pan and started swinging.
"She was fighting for her life," Hutchinson police Sgt. John Moore told
the Hutch News. "She beat him down with a frying pan."
The woman hit Funderburk so hard that she knocked him out. When police arrived around 7 a.m., they found Funderburk unconscious in a pool of his own vomit. He was taken to a hospital where his scalp was stapled shut.
If the story police are giving is true, the guy got off easy. The woman deserves a lot of credit for stopping swinging.
The bad news is the woman was injured, although the extent of her injuries hasn't been reported.
Funderburk is being held on suspicion of attempted rape, aggravated
battery, criminal restraint and
criminal damage to property. His bond is set at $55,200, which should keep him safe from old ladies with frying pans for a while.
