Happy New Year!

Yeah, we know we're two days early, but we're taking Friday off. So no new Plog until 2011.

There's a bit of good news, bad news on the safety front this New Year's Eve. Yellow Cab is no longer doing free cab rides. However, the Kansas City Strip trolley is offering free rides on Friday with stops in all of the party spots -- the Power & Light District, Martini Corner, Westport, 18th & Vine, the Plaza, Brookside and Waldo. So, while you won't be delivered to your doorstep, you can get a lift back to your 'hood for free if you need to get home from one of these entertainment districts.

Why did the cab program go away? The program was more about awareness, which isn't as big of an issue

anymore, Terry O'Toole, general manager of the Kansas City

Transportation Group,

told me. O'Toole says young people in their 20s and 30s are

"cab savvy," so they don't need to be told to cab it home.

As for the switch to the Strip, the majority of the cab rides went from

Waldo to downtown, which the trolley covers. Also, cabs will be

available at all of the Strip stops. So if you need to get to Waldo from

downtown, you can ride the Strip and catch a cab for the last leg of your journey.

Plog returns next week. (Programming note: Next week, Pitch rookie Mandy Oaklander will be your Plog tour guide; I'm taking a week off.) Be safe out there.
