The best food cures for a throbbing hangover

A little menudo on New Year's Day might be the answer.
  • A little menudo on New Year's Day might be the answer.

The old standby "cures" for a particularly intense hangover range from a really greasy breakfast (with lots of bacon and buttered toast) to the Mexican tripe soup menudo, which hangover survivors have long maintained is the ultimate relief for a throbbing headache and queasy tummy.

There will be places to find menudo in the metro on New Year's Day, including all of the local Taqueria Mexico restaurants. But for diners who prefer to eat something less exotic than tripe, there are other options. Here are a few to think about before you start drinking.

The newish Viennese restaurant Grunauer won't serve lunch on New Year's Day, but it will serve dinner from 5 to 11 p.m. Chef Nick Bandelier suggests a nice breaded-and-fried Wiener schnitzel to clear out that headache, especially if it's smothered in Jager sauce, a reduction of red wine and sauteed mushrooms. He says it's good for turbulent stomachs, too.

That iconic Mission diner, The Village Inn, starts serving at 7 a.m. on New Year's Day morning and continues until 9 p.m. A friend of mine insists that his ideal hangover cure can be found here: "You start with orange juice and two Tylenol tablets," he says, "then eat an order of french toast, a potato pancake and two cups of coffee. If you haven't thrown everything up by that point, two pieces of chocolate silk pie. It's a miracle cure."

Another friend insists that the best possible cure for hangovers post-New Year's Eve is a Chinese buffet. "The cheaper the buffet, the better, since it's likely that it's all going to come back up anyway -- along with a lot of toxins and booze."
