Get ready for Smallcakes, America. The Kansas City Business Journal reports that Smallcakes has signed a franchise deal with Beautiful Brands International. The cupcakery is the 14th restaurant concept in a portfolio of BBI franchises around the world.
Jeff and Brandy Martin, the founders of Smallcakes, will continue to operate the stores in the Kansas City area and will have an ownership stake in each of the new franchises.
Jeff Martin received national attention for his appearance on the reality food-competition show Cupcake Wars. After famously forgetting the challenge ingredient of pumpkin, he was invited on The View to talk about what happened. He'll be returning for a shot at redemption in an episode of the reality show's second season that will air this year.
It was Cupcake Wars that got Smallcakes noticed by BBI founder and CEO David Rutkauskas, who stated in a press release announcing the deal that he "fell in love with the brand from the very first bite."
The first franchise outside the Kansas City area will be near Tulsa, Oklahoma, where BBI is based. The cupcakery has expanded rapidly since opening in July 2009.
"It's really cool that a little cupcake shop that opened a couple of years ago is actually doing this on a national level," Martin told the KCBJ.
Smallcakes currently has two area stores: in Olathe (14150 W. 119th St.) and Overland Park (14383 Metcalf). A third is slated to open in Lee's Summit this month.
