Motorhead performs tonight at the Midland with Clutch and Valient Thorr.

Lemmy: 49% Motherfucker, 51 % Son of a Bitch, the new documentary on the legendary Motorhead frontman, has a lot of names telling a lot of stories that back up the "Ace of Spades" singer's hardcore reputation. Drugs, women, rock and roll, and life divided among the tour bus, the stage, and a bar on the Sunset Strip. Yet the most important is the story about Lemmy's cutoffs.

"I mean, these were like Daisy Duke's," Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says

at one point, recounting a roasting hot day in L.A. when Lemmy was bent

over an arcade machine, rear covered only by a scrap of denim.

Did Lemmy care when Ian gave him shit over his cutoffs? Did he curl up into a little ball just because he was wearing the favorite garment of the "Never Nude?" Shit no. He just said it was hot, and cutoffs were cool, and he was probably more comfortable than Scott Ian. Then he went back to his Jack and Coke and game of Megatouch.

It's not that Lemmy gets a pass to rock cutoffs because he's Lemmy; it's that rocking the cutoffs is what's made him Lemmy to begin with. Metaphorically.

Lemmy symbolizes what he does, one musician observes, because he never did anything he wasn't comfortable doing from the start. He never chased trends and he didn't much worry what you thought about it. It doesn't matter if you're a musician or a certified accountant. Don't we all want to do things the way we want, and damn the consequences? For the most part, we don't. That's not to say you suck, just that living how you want is a hard thing to do. It's scary.

Motorhead fans will, of course, love this. If you're not a Motorhead fan, get a copy of "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith," and then I'll understand how to relate to you as a person.

This documentary has gotten some shit for being too fawning toward its subject, but what good would it do us to know about Lemmy's hangovers? If anything, it would make his getting out onstage every night even more heroic.
