RA Sushi got hot for Mardi Gras

Let's put it this way: The sushi wasn't the only thing raw at RA Sushi's Mardi RA party last night.

The upscale sushi restaurant, a see-and-see-be-seen JoCo staple in the Park Place shopping center, lifted its top and let it all hang out for Fat Tuesday. The raucous Mardi Gras-themed celebration started with happy hour at 3 p.m. and lasted until 1 a.m. Colorful caution tape that read "Flying Bead Zone" stretched across one wall; glittering masks and strands of beads bedecked guests and tables; and the space between tables turned into a dance floor.

The happy-hour menu lasted all night and included drinks and dishes, from $3 to $8, designed just for the occasion: Cajun wings; creole peppers; and the Voodoo Roll, an elaborate tempura sushi with king crab, spicy tuna and jalapenos. I was more intrigued by the drink menu, which was the case for the majority of the crowd. I imagined that the King Cake Martini would taste similar to the traditional

Mardi Gras cake of its namesake, which is cinnamon-roll-esque. But it looked and tasted more like a Cosmo than a Cinnabon. Other offerings included the Queen of the Parade cocktail, and bourbon and Coke.

Most of the partiers kept their drinks and their dance moves in the bar area, where DJ Mike Scott played a lively mix of tracks, from Lil' Wayne to Gloria Estefan. But a few dance parties broke out in the dining room. One waitress, in a silver sequined dress, even had a dirty dance-off with a customer, not far from a couple who were quietly enjoying their sushi.

The sweater puppies stayed in their cages, from what I saw, and no one was ticketed for public indecency.

But a party is only as good as the number of threats someone makes to involve the police.

Someone from Aloft Hotel, which shares its ground floor with the restaurant, called the

police to complain of the noise from DJ Mike Scott's deafening dance

beats. Scott replied with a spirited "fuck you" and, after a brief lull

in the music, continued the party.

Any New Orleans native

may have scoffed at the suburban attempt at debauchery, but for the

Leawood crowd, RA earned itself a few strings of beads.
