Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco is trying out for Sporting Kansas City. For real. The club says the four-day tryout will begin Tuesday, and then the club will decide whether to extend the tryout.
I can't see any way that Sporting KC cuts Ochocinco. No way. This publicity is too good, and anything to put asses in the seats is good for Sporting KC.
"We're always searching for players who can help our team and bringing in new talent," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "We know that Chad is an exceptional athlete and that he loves the sport of soccer, and he did play a lot when he was younger. We're excited to see how his skills will translate once he arrives next week and begins training with our team."
Ochocinco played soccer when he was growing up. In those days, he was a striker. Ochocinco called playing soccer a "childhood dream."
"Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said in a statement released by the club. "Thanks to Sporting Kansas City for giving me this opportunity."
Yeah, this is a nice publicity stunt. But Ochocinco has long spoken of his love of the game. In a 2010 interview with Fox Soccer (there is such a thing?), he said:
"Soccer was always my first sport. That was my first love. Started from 4 years old, and once I got to high school, I had to make a decision on what I wanted to focus on and take me to the next level."
Guess the NFL lockout is good for one of Kansas City's sports teams after all.
