The Webster's Dictionary defines a truck stop as a "commercial facility that provides fuel, parking, and usually food and other services to long-haul trucks. Truck stops are usually located on or near a busy road ... "
That's not exactly how one might describe the vacant lot at the corner of 21st Street and Wyandotte in the Crossroads, but starting tomorrow night, it will take on at least two components of a classic highway fueling station:There will be trucks. And food will be provided.
The owners of the vacant lot, Copaken Brooks Development, have invited a number of local food-truck owners -- Los Tules, Curbside Cuisine, CoffeeCakeKC, Good You, and Jerusalem Cafe among them -- to park in the lot and serve their specialties tomorrow night from 6 to 11 p.m. for First Friday festivities.
Melvin Jackson, with his pants unzipped, told police officers that he thought the woman he's accused of raping "was dead," according to court records.
Jackson is accused of raping an unconscious woman at 34th and Troost around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. A witness told police that she saw the woman lying on the ground in the fetal position and Jackson with his pants and underwear around his ankles raping the woman. The witness said she yelled at Jackson, who pulled up his pants and walked northbound on Troost. As the witness waved down a patrol car, she overheard Jackson say, "I thought she was dead." Uh, that would make this not only unacceptable but also super-freaking creepy.
Hartzler can't escape her comments from earlier this month comparing same-sex marriage with incest and pedophilia. Alex Sable-Smith, a University of Missouri medical student who happens to be gay, confronted Hartzler yesterday about her anti-gay record after a town hall meeting in Butler, Missouri. Hartzler, after trying to determine whether Sable-Smith was a Democrat or a Republican, acted surprised that she'd be asked about the 2004 constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and her comments at the Eagle Forum.
Hartzler claimed that it was all a "misunderstanding" and "taken out of context." She also told Sable-Smith that he "shouldn't feel bad" about her anti-gay politics. I'm sure she was sincere when she said, "It was nice to meet you guys" before retreating.

On a recent sunny afternoon, chef Renee Kelly is sitting in her office, trying to cut down on the e-mails in her inbox. Today, her office is the well-appointed patio behind Caenen Castle, and her desk is a white-metal, Highboy table.
"This is pretty great," admits Kelly, just back from a long bike ride. Yesterday, she talked about how food allergies have changed her focus in the kitchen, and today, she explains why she can't get enough of blackberries right now. Tomorrow she shares a recipe for a harissa-rubbed sirloin.
