Trader Joe's is now open in Leawood and Kansas City

Midwest civility is winning out over gourmet-food craziness this morning at Trader Joe's in the Ward Parkway Center (8600 Ward Parkway). Mothers in plastic leis are waiting patiently behind stay-at-home dads, who are busy scrolling through something on their smartphones.

"I just wanted to see what it was all about," Alex Harnes said. He drove in from Independence this morning and was pleased to find a parking spot so quickly.

The line stretched back 20-people deep this morning.

The attitude of Harnes seemed to be the dominant theme among shoppers who wandered from crates of Trader Joe's peaches to Joe's O's (the store's version of Cheerios). It was the kind of aimless shopping that one does when confronted with a store where you have no idea where anything is located.

While it was still possible to navigate the aisles, albeit with difficulty, at 9:30 a.m., the checkout lines were another matter. People standing behind filled shopping carts extended the width of the store, prompting one woman to say with mild exasperation, "I can't take this anymore." She then politely excused herself through six lines of waiting people before calmly leaving.

Kelli Williams of Kansas City was willing to stick it out for her cart, laden with cheese and inexpensive wine.

"I've waited a long time for Trader Joe's. I can wait in line," Williams said.

So, either her wait is over or just beginning. But freedom is only eight people away in the form of a Hawaiian-shirted grocery bagger.

Trader Joe's is now open at Ward Parkway Center and at the One Nineteen Shopping Center (119th Street and Roe) in Leawood. Both stores are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
