  • Cafe Seed is now open only three days a week.

Yes, Cafe Seed — the cozy little vegan restaurant at 2932 Cherry — is still in business. If the "Closed" sign in the window seems to be posted more frequently, it's because the restaurant has changed its business hours. The new hours for the restaurant are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The brunch menu is served all day on Saturday and Sunday.

The Pitch last reviewed Cafe Seed two years ago, when Ericka Mingo still owned the venue. The current owners are Daniel Ordoñez, Spark and Kim Bookhart, and Melanie Allen. The weekend-only hours began on July 15. "They were our highest volume days," Ordoñez says. "And we're also focusing on our new dinner-theater venture."

Not just dinner theater, but a vegan outdoor dinner theater.

Ordoñez says the dinner theater will kick off the first two weekends in September with the play by Aiyesha Banks called The Office. "It's not a comedy," Ordoñez says. Dinner will be served, and the play will be performed in the outdoor courtyard behind the restaurant.

"We tried this last year," Ordoñez says, "and got rained out."

Since Ordoñez and his partners took over the restaurant, the former retail component of Cafe Seed has been removed (there are still books for sale), and the room formerly used as an ersatz shop is now additional dining or lounging space.

Ordoñez says audition times for the dinner-theater show will be posted on the Cafe Seed Facebook page.
